OIAAA RECOGNIZES RECENT NATIONAL COACHING ACCREDITATIONS

The Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association recognizes the following Ohio interscholastic coaches who have recently earned national coaching accreditation from the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and the NFHS Coach Education Program.

The Accredited Interscholastic Coach (AIC) and the Certified Interscholastic Coach (CIC) accreditations are earned through the NFHS Coach Education and Certification Program. The AIC and CIC are national professional credentials offered to individuals who are currently coaching or aspire to coach at the interscholastic level. The attainment of these national certifications demonstrates the completion of a series of courses offered by the NFHS that will enhance the ability of the coach to better serve the student, the school, the community and the profession of coaching.

The AIC and CIC accreditations are additional training opportunities over and above the Ohio coaching licensure as issued by the Ohio Department of Education for interscholastic coaches.  Several school districts in Ohio are now utilizing or are considering the NFHS Coach Education accreditations as requisites for their school coaches.

For additional information about the national Coach Education and Certification Program, go to: www.nfhslearn.com.

Cleveland, Ohio – March 1, 2015 – The nation’s leading ticketing and gate management solution for school-based sports and other ticket-based events, Ticket Roar™, announces its three year partnership agreement with the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrator’s Association (OIAAA).

The OIAAA was formed in 1956 to advocate for member schools by promoting the educational values of interscholastic athletics and to provide professional development and training for school-based athletic directors. Through this partnership, Home Team Marketing (HTM) will further lend its expertise to the OIAAA, helping member schools optimize their ticketing practices overall, enabling full financial accountability and helping to drive incremental revenues.

According to Patrick Spear, HTM Co-founder and Senior Vice President, School Solutions Sales, “The OIAAA is a national leader in supporting interscholastic athletics. We’ve enjoyed a strong and lasting collaboration with them. This new joint venture is just another example of how together, we will successfully aid member schools, by providing a custom-built solution to handle all of their interscholastic ticketing needs.”

“Home Team Marketing’s new and proprietary ticketing solution, Ticket Roar, will continue to enable the mission and purpose of interscholastic athletics and help ensure positive outcomes from education-based athletic programs. HTM’s overall support of schools, student-athletes and school sports has been evident for the last 14 years, working with a wide network of schools and state athletic associations across the country. We’re confident that, the addition of an online ticketing system for schools, will be a product many more schools will embrace over the next few years!” said Bruce Brown, OIAAA Executive Director.

OIAAA Sponsor Spotlight: The Equipment Guys

Port Clinton High School Weight Room Project

The weight room at Port Clinton High School was renovated as part of a district-wide strategic plan for our facilities.  In addition to a new middle school and elementary school buildings, the high school classrooms are on a renovation schedule, receiving the latest technology to prepare our students for the 21st century.  The weight room is home to our student athletes who do not compete at True Lay Stadium as there is an off-campus facility for football and track at the stadium.  Our future goal is to utilize the PCHS weight room as part of our Wellness initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle for our staff and community.

The primary idea behind the design of the weight room was to create multiple stations in a limited space to effectively and efficiently train our athletes during their sports seasons, and in the off-season.  The approach was “less is more”.  The space is only 60 feet x 19 feet, and we wanted to be able to train 20+ athletes without the obstacles of bulky equipment.  To accomplish this we chose four 850 Premium Half Racks with band attachments, twisters, dip bar attachments, and boxes for a multitude of ground based lifts with varying types of resistance.  We added a single Fat Bar Connections between the racks which can be used as an additional training area for pull ups and Jungle Gym attachment.

A major focus of our training program is to prevent injury, and prepare our athletes to perform during competition.  We believe in a balanced training program.  Every push exercise must be accompanied by a pull exercise to create muscular balance across the joints.  That is why we added three Lat Pull Down with Low Row machines, and three Glute Ham Raises as the only other machines and free weight equipment in our weight room.  This gives us the ability to combine both push and pull exercises during training to maximize the limited time that sports teams have to lift during a sports season.  We believe a strength and conditioning program during the season is just as important as the program in the off season.  Weight training during the season is a major emphasis and we expect our coaches make it a main component of weekly practice plans.

To complement our core lifts we added two 8 foot, three tier Dumbbell Racks and two Med Ball/Kettle Bell racks full of free weights for a variety of multi-functional exercises.  We also added two sets of stackable plyo boxes.  Our Dumbbells, Medicine Balls, and Kettle Bells are all in multiples of four so our athletes can train with the weight they need, not the weight that is available.  Once again the multiples of weights allows our athletes to reduce down time during training to maximize both practice time and training session time.

The last component of our weight room transformation, but is the most noticeable it the flooring and the finishing touches to our equipment.  We chose Everlast Ultra Tile for the floor and added red tile to designate lifting stations for each rack.  We added red accents to our 850 half racks to match the paint finish on our walls.  The final accent to our racks are the rack banners with our school name and logo that were designed by the people at The Equipment Guys.  The Equipment Guys did an amazing job of turning my vision of the banners into a reality.

I would like to thank the Equipment Guys on behalf of the Port Clinton City School District for the work they put in to help create our new weight facility.  Their expertise was evident when it came to choosing the equipment, weights, accessories, and even color schemes.  We have had many faculty members, students, and community members comment on the improved functionality and appearance of the space.  Thank you for all your hard work.

Thanks,

Phil Fought

FOUR SCHOOLS TAPPED FOR FIRST “Award of Excellence”

Four Ohio high school athletic departments have been selected to receive the

first Annual “Award of Excellence” recognition in 2015.  The award, a

collaboration between the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and

the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA),

recognizes schools that provide exemplary support and promotion of

education-based athletic programming in their school and community.

Recipients of the inaugural award include:

  • Gilmour Academy (Gates Mill, OH); Jeff Walrich, athleticadministrator
  • Kilbourne HS (Worthington, OH); Jeff Todd, athletic administrator
  • Ottawa Hills HS (Toledo, OH); Tim Erickson, athletic administrator
  • Streetsboro HS (Streetsboro, OH); Randy Tevepaugh, athletic administrator

The focus of the award is to recognize on-going and consistent efforts on

the part of Ohio interscholastic athletic departments that demonstrate best

practice in the endorsement and promotion of education-based athletic

programming.  Specifically, this award recognizes schools that demonstrate

intentional efforts to shift the culture of school-based sport programs as

an on-going process.

Dr. Dan Ross, Commissioner of the OHSAA, Jerry Snodgrass, Assistant

Commissioner of the OHSAA and Bruce Brown, Executive Director of the OIAAA

issued the following joint statement on the inaugural presentation of the

award:  “Ohio interscholastic athletic programs have always been considered

some of the most exemplary programs in the country in reflecting the value

our schools and communities place upon education-based sports.  The

recipients of the ‘Award of Excellence” have demonstrated a consistent and

intentional plan to keep the focus of their sport programs upon delivering

life-long skills for all participants and mirroring the educational mission

of their respective institutions.”

The OHSAA and the OIAAA believe there are several benchmarks which identify

quality, education-based athletic programs:

  • School athletic programs are inherently educational
  • School athletic programs compliment the educational experience
  • School athletic programs enhance the educational mission of theschool
  • School athletic programs serve as an extension of the academicclassroom
  • School athletic programs teach life lessons not regularly available in the academic classroom
  • School athletic programs have courts, fields, tracks, pools and courses as teaching classrooms

Award recipients will be honored during the 2015 Ohio Boys State Basketball

Championships (March 26-28) at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of The

Ohio State University.  For additional details on the “Award of Excellence”

criteria, go to:

Athletic Administrator Assessment Tool

Over the past year, the OIAAA has been asked if we recommend an assessment tool of an athletic administrator by administrative peers.  We recognize that many of our Ohio athletic directors also serve as assistant principals and may be under OPES evaluative criteria.

On the following link, you will find an evaluative tool that is designed specifically for the school athleticadministrator.  The benchmarks for this assessment come directly from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators brochure, “A Profile of Athletic Administration” (you can view this brochure at the following link: http://digital.turn-page.com/i/281413).
